As we said, renting a bar for your event, doesn’t have to just be for alcohol anymore. After the number of Chicago events we’ve done throughout some of the most sought-after event venues, we’ve seen some really creative ideas.

Are you looking for creative stations or displays at your wedding or event? Here are a few of our favorite ways to rent a bar for your event and use it for more than just alcohol:

Rent a bar as a dessert station. Because we have more than one of each style of bar in our collection, many of our clients opt to use one for the drink bar, and another (or more) to keep the design of their event consistent, for a dessert bar. We’ve seen some unique dessert stations displayed on our bar rentals:

  • A donut bar
  • A pie bar
  • A cotton candy bar
  • A s’more bar
  • A DIY sundae bar
  • A milk and cookie bar
  • A popsicle bar

Rent a bar for an appetizer station during a cocktail hour at a wedding or the start of a corporate event. Here are some of the most fun and unique appetizer stations we’ve seen displayed on our bar rentals:

  • A pickle bar
  • A biscuit bar
  • A potato bar
  • A salsa bar
  • A popcorn bar
  • A cheese bar
  • A charcuterie bar

Rent a bar to display announcements, details or signage. Whether you’re hosting a wedding and want to display family heirlooms or photos, or a corporate party with a seating chart or event agenda, using a bar  can be the perfect height and beautiful addition of furniture to keep your event design looking consistent. Here are a few ways to incorporate a bar into your event, without food or alcohol on it:

  • Seating chart or escort cards
  • Photos of parents, grandparents, or loved ones who may not be with you anymore at a wedding or family reunion
  • An event agenda or timeline (this works perfectly for a corporate event)
  • Name tag station (think holiday party)
  • Swag display or handout (think holiday or corporate party)
  • Party favor display (think kids party, family reunion, or baby shower)

Rent a bar for a unique interactive activity at your event. Events are progressively becoming less traditional. Whether it’s something personal to a couple getting married or something that applies to a brand standard or core value, experience is everything! Renting a bar for the set up can be a great way to make it all fit nicely into your event. Here are a few unique ideas for renting a bar for your event experience:

  • Cigar rolling station
  • Mixologist lessons or craft cocktail displays
  • Cannabis or CBD samples  (keep in mind cannibis is not legal for recreational use in all areas)
  • Bouquet building (this can double as a party favor!)
  • Guest book, sign-in station, or notes. This could apply to a corporate event (think testimonials about company culture) or a wedding (in the traditional guestbook or sign-in sequence).

Renting furniture for your wedding, corporate event, holiday party, or social gathering, is a great way to infuse the design personality into your event space. If you’re booking a blank canvas event venue, furniture and decor rentals can really set the tone for the entire event and change the look of every photo of your night. If you are booking a semi-furnished ballroom, accent pieces like renting a bar can really help make everything come together.

Meet our founder, Katie Ernst

What are your roots?

I am from New Orleans and came to Chicago during college because Oprah was here. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know much else about the city but it instantly stole my heart. Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

What do you do in your off time?

This answer changes with the seasons. The other night my kids and I cooked a meal together and spent a long time talking around the table after, so that has skyrocketed to the top of the list of my summer highlights. This has been a season of live music, patio drinks with friends, and hanging in the backyard with my dogs and a good book.

“I am so proud of the fact that this fantastic team found their way to B&B. They are truly THE BEST. I love that I’ve been able to create the business that I want to lead.” – Katie

Meet Ally Krasavage, our Marketing + Operations Manager

What are your roots?

I’m from the southwest suburbs. I went to UIC, graduated, and have been in Chicago, IL ever since. after graduation, I resided in the south loop for just a couple years until purchasing my first home,  a charming 1890s 4 flat,  in Jefferson Park!

What do you do in your off time?

In my free time, you can find me bouncing around my garden at my home, hanging out with my cat, watching cheesy reality TV, plant shopping or dreaming of my next home project for my husband to do (and me to manage).

“I love the culture of the company. We’re a small team that is huge into our core values, which are audacity, authenticity, humility, respect, and humor.  It’s a dream to be in an industry that values such self-expression, style, and storytelling. At the end of the day, we get to work with gorgeous rental furniture, so I’m lucky to be surrounded by beautiful things.” – Ally

Meet Jade Kwiatkowski, our Events + Logistics Coordinator

What are your roots?

I am from the south suburbs of Chicago. I lived in Wicker Park during college, but I am in the Western Suburbs now.

What do you do in your off time?

In my off time, you can find me biking, reading, planning my wedding, cooking, and hanging with my best friend, my black lab Violet 🙂

“My favorite part of Bowery & Bash is being a part of such an awesome team! We work so well together and I am so thankful for their support. I am also constantly inspired by the furniture and events I am surrounded by!” – Jade

Meet Ed McMurtry-Kelly, our Warehouse Coordinator + Crew Chief

What are your roots?

I was born and raised in Chicago. Specifically, I am from Austin, a westside neighborhood, and continue to reside there. Recently, however, I moved out of my childhood home and moved in with friends.

What do you do in your time off?

In my time off I love to bike, play basketball, and be a part of youth programs in Chicago. Two of the youth programs that I am involved in are “UCAN”, where I am a mentee and “SLAM” where I am both mentor and a mentee.

“My favorite part about being a part of the Bowery Team extends past this company. Currently, I am a mentor to other young, black people in Chicago. Being able to passionately carry out the role that I do, and do it well in this company allows me to empower the people that I mentor as well as my peers. I feel that I am truly defeating the odds.” – Ed

Meet Spencer Barry-Jenkins, our Production Coordinator

What are your roots?

I am originally from Pasadena, CA. Then, I moved to Missouri for college, told myself I would only be in the Midwest for 4 years. However, I got an internship in Chicago after graduating, and told myself I’d only be in Chicago for the summer…that was 6 years ago.

What do you do in your time off?

Hang out with my cats Calvin and Carlos, read, garden/take care of my indoor plants, and cook 🙂

“My favorite part about being a part of the Bowery + Bash team, is the people. Alos, being able to use the creative and logistical parts of my brain every day.” – Spencer

Meet Julia Villari, Our Event & Logistics Assistant

What are your roots?

I was born and raised in the South Suburbs of Chicago specifically in the Tinley Park area. I still live close by in New Lenox.

What do you do in your time off?

During my time off I love to spend time with family, travel, and paint.

“I love being a part of the Bowery & Bash team because everyone lifts each other up and helps one another get the job done. I truly feel valued here every day.” – Julia

Meet Olivia Potwora, our Creative Design Intern

What are your roots?

I am originally from a small town in southern California, San Clemente. I moved to Chicago about three and a half years ago to go to DePaul. I now live in River North!

What do you do in your time off?

In my time off I love to work on decorating my apartment, spend time at the lake with friends, watercolor, and throw cocktail hours and dinner parties.

“My favorite part about working at Bowery and Bash is the people that I work with. Throughout my internship here I have been so graciously welcomed into this team and feel that I have genuinely been able to gain mentors and friends for life.” – Olivia

Wedding Songs by Personality Type

Wedding Songs by Personality Type

It’s easy to look up the top wedding songs and simply take your pick… but your wedding song is something that you’ll remember forever and something that says a lot about you as a couple and should ideally fit the style of your event and your personality type as a couple.

In fact, Brides.com helped us understand the connection between the personality types assigned in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment with song choice and event style. This questionnaire is designed to help people understand themselves and others, then consequently “lead more fulfilling and effective lives,” by assigning them a four-letter personality preference using a combination of eight letters below:

E(xtrovered) or I(ntroverted) + S(ensing) or i N(tuition) + T(hinking) or F(eeling) + P(erceiving) or J(udging)

Here are a few examples from Brides.com that  show how personality type can tie back to your event personality and wedding song selection:

The Reluctant Bride
Wedding Dress: Subtle, sophisticated little white dress.

First Dance Song: “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane
From the title alone, the introvert in you is immediately drawn to a song about escaping a crowd (“And if you have a minute, why don’t we go / Talk about it somewhere only we know”). And, the ISTJ’s realism shines in lyrics like “I’m getting old, and I need something to rely on.” This acoustic version is laidback and romantic—perfect for a non-fussy ceremony or the car ride to the airport before your elopement.

Food: Cheese and Chocolate Boards
Since ST-types tend to be ultra-detailed, offerings will be grouped strategically to best complement their interaction of flavors.

Planning Strategy: All You!
ISTJ peeps take pleasure in the orderly. Once you’ve made your decisions, you’ll work steadily towards your goals, regardless of distractions. Even if you’re not about a lot of fanfare, what you are about, you’ll execute just fine yourself.

The Nurturing Bride

Wedding Dress: Think modern fairytale, Disney princess statement dress.

First Dance Song: “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes
“I want to make you feel wanted” is your life mantra turned lyrical. But, take a minute of the three or so in this pop-country ballad for yourself too. (“Your beauty’s deeper than the make-up…”)

Food: Next-Level Cocktail Hour Hors d’oeuvres
Bless you, for refusing to let your guests suffer crappy crudités while you and your partner are photographed during cocktail hour. From fried mac & cheese lollipops to grilled cheese with tomato soup shots, comfort food assembled for convenience appeals to all your considerate tendencies.

Planning Strategy: Friends-and-Family Approach
Many ISFJs have an uncanny ability to remember specifics about what matters to people who are close to them. In your constant pursuit of minding the preferences of others, you’ll want everyone weighing in. Just beware of conflicting opinions, and don’t be afraid to remind people this is still your wedding.

The Ambitious Bride

Wedding Dress: Backless
You’re “bringing sexy back” with a dramatic swoop that showcases moxie and your recent proclivity for push-ups since you’ll likely be committed in your fitness goals as well.

First Dance Song: “Love Is Easy” by McFly
INTJs are often called “The Scientists” due to how well their organizational skills complement their honest insight. You are quick to build observations about the world around you and understand new ideas. So for you, love is just “a simple equation / With no complications / To leave you confused / If this is love, love, love / Hmm, it’s the easiest thing to do.”

Food: Raw Bar
Decadent, but daunting—still, the quality-control required by seafood is nothing the structured and application-based INTJs can’t handle.

Planning Strategy: Wedding Blogs
Apply the scientific method by observing multiple ideas and inspiration online and then figuring out what works for your situation.

The Artistic Bride

Wedding Dress: Minimalist
The chic vibes of modern minimalism suggest a quiet artistic statement without offending anyone—the best of both worlds for an ISFP.

First Dance Song: “How Long Will I Love You?” by Ellie Goulding
You can’t listen to Goulding’s piano-driven melody here without swaying. The sweetness of her voice and her words effortlessly capture the ISFP’s concern for others; you guys won’t even love someone unless he/she gives the okay (“How long will I love you / As long as stars are above you / And longer if I may). And in the final stanza, we hear the ISFP’s declaration of YOLO, albeit more refined: “We’re all traveling through time together / Every day of our lives / All we can do is do our best / To relish this remarkable ride.”

Food: Bagels
To promise happiness to every one of your guests, you will literally have “everything,” and multiple other bagel types, with a wide assortment of smears and gluten-free offerings too.

Planning Strategy: Apps
Many ISFPs need space to evaluate and work. They value alone time and being left to their own time frames, so apps they can scroll through on their private phones are one way to go.

The Fun Bride

Wedding Dress: Embellished
Fashion-focused and concerned with trends, the ESTP will choose a socially-acceptable dress that’s on-point, but still, OF COURSE, fun! Embellishments provide a “wow” factor without drifting too far from the mainstream.

First Dance Song: “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness
Take a spin on the boring slow dance with this popular banger from the early 2000s. C’mon—that falsetto is all fun.

Food: Late-Night Breakfast
A night-out with you has ended in a Waffle House or 24/7 diner more than once, so this just feels right.

Planning Strategy: Top-Rated Planner
Planners who are well-connected, informed, and trendy with a proven track record only need apply.

The Trendy Bride

Wedding Dress: Your aesthetic is runway-ready, so your dress is likely to be as of the moment as they come.

First Dance Song: “Lost in Your Light” by Dua Lipa
The ESFPs have known the up-and-coming reign of Dua Lipa for a hot minute, so it’s understandable they’d choose a good-feeling, upbeat love song from one of the most prominent artists on the scene right now.

Food: Brunch
Brunch will never go out of style, and as daytime weddings become more and more hip, it’s an in-vogue choice for ESFP brides.

Planning Strategy: Pinterest
You’ll stay abreast of what’s trending, and find the widest range of ideas so you can be sure to have the most fun and diverse options for your guests.

The Edgy Bride

Wedding Dress: Something different and possibly another color
A traditional white, strapless wedding dress feels way passé to many ENTPs, who are more likely to prefer these colorful standouts.

First Dance Song: “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson
There’s a playful sardonic vibe to this song (“I’d buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair. Sew on patches to all you tear.”). While its narrator seems to acknowledge she can sometimes be a little prickly, the way she is works for her lover, so c’est la vie! (“Cause I love the way you call me baby. And you take me the way I am.”)

Food: Specialty Cuisine
Maybe the flavors are surprising or spicy. Perhaps there’s a funny story about you and your groom’s first date at an Indian restaurant. Even if they’re a little unorthodox for a wedding, if you ENTPs love these foods and want them, they’re there.

Planning Strategy: All of them
ENTPs are quick, ingenious, and bored by routine. Since you guys are quick to turn to one new interest after another, it’s likely you’ll use a myriad of sources to inspire your wedding decisions.

The Executive Bride

Wedding Dress: Metallic
Your dynamic presence demands a dress that’s simultaneously glamorous, edgy, and unapologetically you.

First Dance Song: “The Book of Love” by Peter Gabriel
Your nuanced, and admittedly sometimes thorny, sense of humor plays out loud and clear in a song with lyrics like, “The book of love is long and boring / No one can lift the damn thing.”

Food: mistake-free Menu
ENTJs cannot abide by inefficiency or easily-avoided mishaps.

Planning Strategy: Oversee a Planner
An ENTJ finds few things as satisfying as lively, demanding conversation. She’ll respect her planner’s expert opinions, but will obviously wield the final stamp of approval herself.

Don’t see a category that you fit into above? Here are a few other wedding song favorites:

  • “BLACK AND WHITE” BY NIALL HORAN
  • “PERFECT” BY ED SHEERAN AND BEYONCE
  • “YOU ARE THE REASON” BY CALUM SCOTT AND LEONA LEWIS
  • “CONVERSATIONS IN THE DARK” BY JOHN LEGEND
  • “LOVER” BY TAYLOR SWIFT
  • “SPEECHLESS” BY DAN + SHAY
  • “STUCK WITH U” BY ARIANA GRANDE AND JUSTIN BIEBER
  • “ANYTHING FOR YOU” BY LEDISI FEATURING PJ MORTON
  • “I AM YOURS” BY ANDY GRAMMER

Despite your wedding planning style, food style or first dance selection, we are excited to help you pull together the overall look of your event with the wedding rentals. Our professional team is happy to take you on a walk through our warehouse to show you our beautiful, diverse inventory and suggest pieces that will bring your vision to life. WEDDING RECEPTION TRENDS IN 2023

Can you believe we’re already halfway through 2022 and looking into planning trends for 2023? Well, believe it! Wedding trends are always changing from year to year and even season to season, but we are pretty excited about what we see on the horizon. Over the past few years, we’ve seen traditions go to the wayside as more and more weddings were postponed, rescheduled, or even turned into an elopement, but in 2023 (and even in 2022), we expect to continue to see more trends making an appearance during the wedding reception. After some time without many parties, people are ready to throw a party that will be one for the record books!

UNIQUE FLOWERS

Dried flowers are becoming more and more popular. Mixing dried flowers into bouquets can create a decorative bouquet that is earthy, unique, and of course, beautiful. Adding greenery with the dried flowers allows the florals in the arrangements to become more visible. It creates lovely contrast as centerpiece arrangements, on walls around the reception space, or even attached to outdoor gazebos.

FLOWER WALLS & FLOWER ARCHES

Kiss balloon arches goodbye and welcome the beautiful flower arch. It’s been popular in past years but is definitely making a comeback in 2022. Expect to see reception areas full of gorgeous florals, from floral walls as photo backdrops to floral arches in doorways. They are a great way to sprinkle in your wedding flowers as well as a touch of color throughout your wedding reception area.

A POP OF METALLIC

Couples are opting for a full glam and shimmery look in 2023. Metallics can fit into various wedding styles, from rustic to modern, to chic industrial weddings. From metallic stationery to centerpieces with metal vases, expect to see pops of metallic in wedding receptions this year. Decorate with metallic lanterns for a more vintage vibe and add a touch of romance to the space. Fill with candles for soft and romantic lighting.

THE WEDDING CAKE COMEBACK

Couples ditched wedding cakes for a few years to showcase their favorite treats, donuts, and cupcakes, but in 2023, wedding cakes will making a comeback. From naked cakes to metallic cakes, expect to see the wedding cake making its way back into the wedding reception.

SKIPPING THE BOUQUET AND GARTER TOSSES

Newlyweds always say that their wedding day goes by too fast; we are seeing more couples skipping the traditions that don’t serve them so that they can really enjoy their wedding day as much as they can. In 2023, expect to see the bouquet and garter toss be less popular at the wedding reception. Some couples feel that the bouquet and garter toss are outdated traditions and want to do something that feels more unique and personal, like a private dance before the guests arrive or after the guests have left. It is still a special moment for the newlyweds during the reception and is less traditional.

THE RISE OF CHECKERED PATTERNS

In 2021, checkered patterns started rising in the interior design world. That rising trend can be expected to be seen in weddings this year. From checkered dance floors to small accents like table linens or napkins, the black and white pattern offers a vintage and more traditional look.

PRE-WEDDING TOASTS

Toasts are always a special moment during the reception. Still, more and more couples are opting for more intimate toasts during their rehearsal dinner and skipping toasts all together during their wedding reception. It helps ease anxiety for those giving the toasts and allows for more time for guests to dance and enjoy the reception.

PERSONALIZED SIGNATURE DRINKS

Signature drinks are making a splash this year. Whether you plan on having an open bar or not, having a signature drink (or a few) on the menu makes for a fun addition to the reception. Choose from your favorite drink or create something special for the big day. It’s a fun way for couples to customize their bar experience for their guests in a way that fits their personality and taste.

WEEKDAY WEDDINGS

Most traditional weddings fall on weekends, with Friday and Saturday typically the most popular. In 2023, expect to see more weddings being held on weekdays. With the pandemic, so many weddings got postponed and rescheduled, creating a large backlog of weddings. More and more couples are opting to have a weekday wedding to tie the knot. It keeps couples from having to wait another year to say I do and is perfect for couples looking for wedding receptions that are smaller and more intimate.

HAND-PRINTED DETAILS

Hand-printed wedding décor makes for a more unique and custom wedding experience. Expect to see a significant increase in hand-printed wedding decor details through centerpiece candles, ribbons, reception signage, and even table linens. It’s the perfect way for couples to incorporate an artsy side into their wedding day.

VIBRANT COLOR PALETTES

Neutrals and pastel colors have been popular for years. In 2023, expect to welcome bold splashes of color to wedding day color palettes. Pantone predicts the top colors for this year to be pink and purple tined orchid bloom, bright blue, fair green, and bubblegum pink, and we think we’ll continue to see them into 2023.

UNIQUE TABLE LAYOUTS

During the pandemic, unconventional table plans and layouts were created to help keep everyone safe and distant. As a result, a variety of new creative table layouts were created and are here to stay. Expect to see the unexpected when it comes to table setups, like square table layouts, u -shaped designs, t- shaped designs, and even x-shaped designs with long tables. The unique table layout goes against the traditional look and gives your wedding reception a more unique and creative feel while letting more (or less) guests together.

OUTDOOR FIRST DANCES

First dances are traditionally done indoors in the reception area. In 2020 and 2021, the first dance went outdoors for safety reasons, but with the addition of string lights and rug carpeted courtyards, the trend is here to stay. Outdoor first dances create a magical moment for the newlyweds and their guests and are a fun twist on the traditional first dance.

Luckily, if you’re looking for the addition of a perfectly styled outdoor experience, incorporation of some of the new color palette trends, or just ideas on creating something perfectly personalized, Bowery and Bash can help. We offer an extensive rental collection ranging from individual decor pieces, to large furniture, rugs, textiles and more. Flowy floor-to-ceiling retractable drapery in a beige voile fabric allows the main floor to be separated into three areas, as needed, and adds a soft, organic texture against the raw steel staircase, early industrial architecture, and windowed atrium built into the space. The lofted level features an open mezzanine as well as closed conference room spaces. East-facing windows on the second level offer views on the skyline and railroad tracks. There are two stylishly appointed dressing lounges on-site that can be used as green rooms or break-out rooms. The event space comes furnished for guest counts up to 250.

What is the average cost of a wedding in 2022?

And the answer is: it depends (on a lot of factors – location, type of venue, day of the week, and more).

According to a ZOLA survey, 28 percent of couples are budgeting between $10,000 and $20,000 for their big day—making that budgetary range the most common for a wedding in 2022. But, as a whole, the amount that couples were willing to pay for their weddings were all over the map—with budgets ranging from $5,000 all the way to $100,000-plus.

For example, 16 percent of couples budgeted less than $10,000 for their wedding, which could, for example, cover costs for a backyard ceremony or a small celebration at a local recreation center. But, 12 percent of couples budgeted between $50,000 and $100,000 for their wedding, which would, in most places, take care of an event at an upscale wedding venue for a sizable guest list. And two percent of respondents budgeted over $100,000 for their wedding, which, depending on the wedding size, could pay for a destination wedding in some of the world’s most exclusive locales.

And even when couples have a wedding budget in mind, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the amount they ultimately pay for their wedding will align with that budget. A whopping 70 percent of couples are spending more on their 2022 weddings than originally planned. And, while some of the reasons for going over-budget are simple (just under budgeting to begin with), others are more 2022-specific—like supply chain issues, gas prices, and more driving up the cost of wedding-related items.

The bottom line is that there is no “average” cost for a wedding; your wedding costs will depend on what kind of wedding you want to have (and how well you stick to your budget). In 2022, it would be more beneficial to explore the average budget for the different types of events. For example the average cost of a backyard intimate ceremony on a weeknight vs. a luxury downtown Chicago hotel ballroom with a large guest list.

On average, who pays?

Much like most things in modern weddings, there is no right or wrong answer. In most cases, full wedding day costs are being split between parents and the happy couple themselves. According to ZOLA, 37 percent of survey respondents report that they’re planning to pay for everything related to their wedding entirely on their own. Six percent of respondents have even gotten second or third jobs to cover wedding costs!

What are couples willing to splurge on?

Sticking to a wedding budget is important; however, most couples have an item or two that they aren’t willing to give on. For most couples, this ties back to the experience that is created at their wedding. Whether it’s the design (hint: think about your event rental options) that their guests are stepping into that is simply unforgettable, the photographer to capture the memories of the day or the music/entertainment, it’s important to figure out what’s most important to you and your soon-to-be-spouse, before you decide how to allocate your budget.

Here is a common breakdown (thanks to BRIDES.com) explaining the typical breakdown per category of expense:

Budget Breakdown

  • Venue and Catering: 40 percent of your budget
  • Photography and Videography: 15 percent of your budget
  • Wedding Attire and Beauty: 5 percent of your budget
  • Music/Entertainment: 10 percent of your budget
  • Flowers & Decor: 20 percent of your budget
  • Favors and Gifts: 2 percent of your budget
  • Transportation: 3 percent of your budget
  • Stationery: 3 percent of your budget
  • Cake: 2 percent of your budget

How do I get the most “bang for my buck” in rentals?

Be strategic with your selections. Large pieces (think sitting areas, statement chairs, etc.) will go along way and allow you establish the design personality and aesthetic of your event without breaking the bank. Talk to your planner or our design team to ensure you are able to spread pieces out throughout the space, and have a little splash of the design throughout your event.

What else goes into a wedding budget?

As if the wedding isn’t expensive enough, you’ll also want to consider what the next stage of life looks like for you. Whether that includes an exotic destination honeymoon to celebrate your nuptials or even the downpayment on your future home and furnishings together, it’s important to start planning for your future.

According to a survey, the most common other items being budgeted for include starting a family (23 percent of couples are putting aside money to cover the costs associated with starting a family, including fertility treatments), paying off debt (47 percent are budgeting for student loans, while 25 percent are working towards paying down other debt), a car (39 percent), and medical expenses (10 percent).

How should you track it?

We’re not all accountants, so if you’re struggling for a way to track your expected spending and make sure you don’t go over budget, here’s a tip. To track your spending every step of the way, do what wedding planners do and create an Excel workbook or Google Doc. Here are the important elements to include. Down the side of your document, break each category into its component’s costs. For example, under “Bride’s attire,” make line items for the dress, accessories, and alterations. Breaking each category into subcategories will prevent you from forgetting key costs that may go beyond what you expected. For example, every one includes the cost of what they will wear (their dress or tux, etc.) but not everyone remembers to include the alterations that they’ll need. These little added extras can add up quickly.

Next, fill in columns with essential information. Every spreadsheet should include the vendor’s contract information, estimated cost, actual cost, additional service fees and tips, transportation and parking costs for off-site vendors, and taxes. Create a line for your grand total, and use the auto-sum function to add things up as you go.

Event Rental Industry in 2022

Now more than ever, weddings and events don’t have to follow a certain set of rules. Weddings are becoming increasingly more personal and customized to the couple and their lifestyles, and the event rentals component of your wedding is no exception. Whether you’re interested in a sea of vibrant colors, or a cottage-inspired romantic escape, we can suggest the perfect pieces for your wedding day.

How do we find inspiration?

The event rental industry (and the event industry in general) draw inspiration from many different places year-to-year, whether it be pop culture,  interior design, or something in between, inspiration is all around us. So, what inspires Bowery and Bash, and the event rental industry in 2022?

To answer this question, first, we need to take a step back and explore what makes a design trend. According to 99 Designs, a design trend can be described as, “How we interpret what’s happened before, to help us try to understand and predict the future. The idea is that we want something different than we have now, but not too different. A gradual change from what was to what will be.”

In most cases when someone thinks of a trend, they immediately think of fashion. A fashion trend signifies a specific look or expression that is spread across a population at a specific time and place. A trend then persists and continues because people have seen it as part of a society’s culture. A trend shows a transitory increase or decrease of a particular idea, event or phenomenon. Similarly, trends in the event design industry follow the same pattern.

Our professional team is always looking for upcoming design trends and opportunities in the event industry, and we set no limitations on where we draw inspiration from. Whether it’s from interior designers (who are often leading the pack), home builders, wedding planners, or something or someone completely unexpected like musicians or actors, we are always on the lookout, to ensure we have the items you may be looking for to complete or set the tone for the look in your event space.

According to, popular interior designer, Netflix star, and furnishings designer, Shea, owner and creative mastermind behind the monster brand Studio McGee, the new year will come with many design shifts. Take a look at a few of them below:

  1. An increase in pattern-heavy elements. In the interior design world, these patterns may make jaw-dropping statements via window treatments, wallpaper or large textiles. In the event world, you may have to think small to make a big impact. Consider heavily patterned throws or pillows on sitting areas, strategically placed rugs to draw attention to a space, or even backdrops for fun photo opportunities in your event venue.
  2. Romantic materials and textures. What says wedding more than romance? Incorporating small items that add a bit of a whimsical romance to your event space will soften it up, bring a feeling of welcoming warmth and even add dimension to your space.
  3. Warmer color palettes and materials. From natural stones to browns and terracotta tones, warm color palettes are making their way into events more than ever. Could this be a result of people enjoying and spending more time outdoors over their Covid quarantines? We like to think so – and we aren’t mad about it!
  4. The addition of pedestals. This born-again trend went out with the free-standing white stone pillar style pedestals, years ago, but is making its dramatic comeback in different shapes and sizes. From blocky wooden pedestals to natural stump-style pedestals, they are a simple but impactful addition to an event space.

As we mentioned, inspiration is not solely derived from interior designers.

In addition to inspiration found from interior designers, we also look to some of the most sought-after wedding and event planners to explore predictions and event design trends.

Take a look at a few of the notable trends listed by planners around the United States.

  1. OUTDOOR INSPIRED DESIGN: Amy Shey Jacobs, owner and creative director of Chandelier Events in New York says, “Perhaps it’s the outdoor influence or the attitude that, ‘We’re finally here!’ My team expects more weddings with a relaxed luxury feel in 2022. This means there’s less fuss about the traditions and more fun. The formality of even the most lavish weddings will be slightly pared down in the year ahead. While the classic black-tie wedding will still be around, we will see more and more of a relaxed vibe coming into play at weddings.”
  2. NEUTRAL & NATURAL DESIGN: Rattan elements, macrame tassel chandeliers, wishbone chairs and plush seating in neutrals have created an earthy and comfortable aesthetic at home in 2021, which will be prevalent across 2022 wedding trend aesthetics. “You tend to see rentals follow what happens with traditional interior design,” says Esther Lee (of The Knot). “Lately, the industry is expanding to contemporary furniture.” This includes cloud couches and other soothing touches and palettes that especially work well in outdoor natural settings.

  3. FLORAL COTTAGE INSPIRED DESIGN: We can’t ignore the Bridgerton inspired and popular internet aesthetic of “cottagecore” for creating an industry-wide movement around cozy garden themes. Beautiful floral decorations and installations against tufted velvet seating, gold embellishments and tailored attire are just a few ways couples are leaning into the garden party theme. “The only cultural exposure any of us got last year was via Netflix,” explains Lee. “Who didn’t watch Bridgerton? Those were the only balls or parties we ‘attended.’ It’s only natural that all things British Regency and English countryside are influencing our design dreams of today.”

“We are seeing a huge demand for hanging florals and also large floral installations where they are suspended above tables or even move from floor to ceiling along the full length of the table.” -Tara Fay

  4. DOPAMINE DESIGN: “We all know one of the biggest trends to emerge from the pandemic is dopamine dressing. I’m looking forward to creating ‘dopamine environments.’” -Bryan Rafanelli “Couples want to celebrate in technicolor! They want to sit at a living table, resplendent in florals and dine under ceilings of florals and lights.” –Tara Fay
  5. ART-INSPIRED DESIGN: “The entire room becomes part of the experience. Clients are thinking about custom ways to fill (or add to) empty spaces, creating complex signature graphic or artistic branding into their details. For example, we contracted an artist to paint the couple through his abstract style. While we prominently hung the painting, we also incorporated the artwork in other ways, from the small scale of food-to-go boxes to an oversized rendering on a custom dance floor.” -Mindy Weiss

In 2020 and 2021 the Chicago event rental style has changed dramatically (as did everything with events). It was all about practical solutions in unique spaces that allowed for social distancing, while still creating a beautiful backdrop for the occasion. At the time, it was about creating a sense of calmness for event guests, who weren’t likely feeling very relaxed in an event environment. While Covid and social distancing are still a concern to take into account, couples and guests alike are ready to experience something new! In 2022, we can expect to see more accents and decorative furnishings to turn the calm and zen-like areas into an interior and event designer’s dream.

2022 Event Rental Style Trends

Natural Materials

Expect a focus on more natural materials. In the past, events often stayed away from natural materials, especially when considering event rentals and event design. In 2022, expect spaces to be full of natural material-made rentals that make the space feel timeless with warm. Natural woods will be showcased throughout the furniture and mixed with other materials. The soft shade of the natural woods creates a calm and relaxing ambiance that works perfectly in events.

One of our favorite inventory items is the natural wood side tables:

We also love the look of this natural wood bar paired with the bright pops of color!

Black Accents

Black accents are going to be a staple in 2022. From black accent pieces, like table lamps, to black furniture pieces, you can expect to see more event spaces showcasing splashes of black. The color black instantly makes the event feel more modern and adds depth to an area. Consider adding black accents to a minimal space to create a bold contrast for an edgy twist on a minimal design.

Take a look at this rich black bar that you can find in our rental inventory:

Marble

Bold, heavy marbles are making their way into the event rentals world and are expected to stay. The distinct colors within the marble create the perfect addition to a dark and moody kitchen, or a light and bright space. Clean lines were once the only way to display marble, but you can also expect to see some rough and rugged slabs options in the near future.

We have a number of beautiful stone and marble pieces in our inventory.

Textured Fabrics

Expect to see a variety of textured fabrics this year.  Textured fabrics make for a comfortable, decorative addition to any space and are a perfect way to give off a luxurious and modern chic feel.

Fringe Accents

Fringe accents are making an appearance in 2022 and are here to stay for the year. What was once a popular accent on blankets and pillowcases is now becoming an unexpected decorative staple. From rugs to seating options, like on sofas and ottomans, expect to see fringe accents to add a chic and romantic look to furnishing. Pair the fringe with a textured throw blanket to add different textures throughout an event lounge space to add contrast and interest to the area.

Dark, Earthy Tones

2022 event furnishing trends are shifting to all things dark and moody. Expect to see a variety of furnishings that showcase rich and deep shades throughout the year. From shades of brown to copper to darker earthy tones, these deep, moody shades will be scattered throughout event design trends. Expect to see these darker shades mixed in with shades of black and gray to accentuate the moody feel.

Statement Lighting

While you can’t control all the lighting in your venue – you can still incorporate your design style into the accent lighting. Well-designed lights can change the ambiance and the look of a venue in an instant. Expect lighting that embodies more than one trend, like a sculptural light with round edges or metallic lighting for a curated look.

Hammered Metals

Hammered metals will be a complete vibe this year and are the perfect addition to the dark and moody event trend. From hammered metal decor to larger furnishings, like accent chairs, hammered metals can add a contemporary feel to any event space, no matter the style. The hammered metal texture offers a welcomed contrast in the space and fits into many different styles.

Soft Lines

The curvy design trend of 2021 has not only survived the pandemic but is thriving in 2022. Furniture and decor pieces with soft curves and softer edges are certainly easy on the eyes and cast feminine energy within the space. Curvy furniture complements harsher, more angled pieces while adding a soft and romantic feel to the event design. It screams modern era and is certainly a trend we welcome for 2022.

Indoor / Outdoor Rattan

chicago event rental style

The lines are truly blurred when it comes to rattan and wicker. Rattan and wicker have been outdoor favorites for years but are making their way indoors in 2022. They pack a punch when it comes to furniture and give off a natural and raw feel. The woven look creates a beautiful texture that can be paired with smoother materials for a contrasting look.

Ceramics

White ceramics are a common modern addition to tables, centerpieces, and more but expect a twist this year. Colored or brown ceramics add instant warmth to your event space. Expect to see round, curvy edges and an unglazed finish to give off a handcrafted and raw look.

Bringing the Outside In

Over the last couple of years, hosting an event inside or outside has weighed into the venue selection process more than ever. As we start to see events being hosted in and outside again, we are seeing couples who are eager to bring some of the outdoor experience and ambiance in. A great way to add a fresh layer of the outdoors throughout your indoor event is the addition of greenery and plant life, and let’s be honest… who doesn’t love a fiddle plant!

You’ll notice that the pop of green really helps add warmth to this already stylish lounge set.

When it’s time to start creating your event rentals style list. It’s important to look at your space to understand what you’ll have room for, and also to look around your home. See what style you’ve gravitated towards in your living environment to be able to communicate what you are attracted to and what you’d like to stay away from for your event rentals and overall event design style.

Start by asking yourself these few questions to dig in a little deeper to your design style. When you come in for your initial consultation, tell us the answers… they’ll help us help you select pieces that make you feel right at home!

  1. If money were no object, where would you shop for your home furnishings?
  2. Do you gravitate towards clean minimalism or layered comfort?
  3. What attire will your guests be wearing? Elegant semi-formal? Black-tie? Imagine your guests at a cocktail hour – so that the environment is a fit for the style of the event and your guests.
  4. What areas of your venue are “customizable”? If you are only able to customize the event style with your seated tables, we’ll want to focus on statement pieces here to set the style. If you have room for seated lounge and conversation areas, we’ll have a lot of options.

Chicago event rental companies

Chicago Event Rental Company

When you begin your search for an event rentals company for your wedding or event, you should start by considering the following:

  • Define the type of event you are creating: This is a significant step. Defining the type of event and the overall design of the event is essential so that the rental company you select, along with all of your other wedding and/or event vendors, have a clear vision for what you’re looking for.
  • List your must-haves: Once you’ve established the type of event you’re having and the overall style, it’s important to think about your must-have items. Whether it’s the basics like tables and chairs, or styled vignettes for your cocktail hour, you’ll want to review your must-have items first and foremost with your rentals provider, and then start thinking about your wishlist. Having a must-have list will help ensure you are working with the right rental company.
  • Define the budget: Once you have your list of must-haves (and potentially another list full of all of your extra wants and wishes), you’ll want to be sure to determine your budget. Rental budgets can vary widely, based on a company’s reputation, experience, variety of products and pieces, additional fees, and more. TIP: getting all the rentals from one company can give you a pricing edge and savings in the long run.  At Bowery and Bash:
    • Our rental rates are priced for a single calendar day. Please ask about multi-day, weekly, and monthly rates.
    • Bowery & Bash has a $1000 rental minimum, excluding taxes and delivery.
    • Travel orders – more than 80 miles from Chicago – have a $2500 rental minimum, not including delivery and travel fees.
    • We allow warehouse pickups for companies with dedicated delivery crews or those who use our friends from Schlep.
  • Quality and reputation: It is very important to ensure that the quality of the rental items is what you’re looking for. Inefficient rental companies might end up sending you dirty chairs, stained linens, or wobbling tables. Selecting a company where you can visit their showroom, or have a virtual walk-thru, to look for yourself whether the quality meets your standards, is ideal. If neither option is available to you, we recommend reading customer reviews at a minimum.
    • “I had a great experience working with Bowery & Bash! I used their furniture for a client’s birthday and the client even remarked that the furniture was even better than she what she saw on the online catalog. Their furniture is high quality and definitely made a statement! Ally and the delivery team was also super easy to work with. They also did a great job sticking to the delivery and pick-up times. Highly recommend and can’t wait to work with them again!”- Amanda, Amanda Paige Events
  • Clarify Services: There are vast services that are expected from the rental companies. It includes delivery, pickup, setup, or takedown. But not all rental companies provide comparable services. You’ll want to clarify what is included in your cost and what part of the service (if any) you’ll need to arrange or handle on your own.

Other factors to take into account:

Once you’ve established where your event will take place, it’s important to dig a little deeper to ensure you have the right rentals planned and accounted for. Here are some items to consider:

  1. How many people are on your guest list? The answer to this question is essential for planning. It tells you how many chairs, place settings, and tables you need. It may also determine the types of tables that best suit your needs.
  2. When is the party? Securing your rentals from Bowery and Bash early is important. We encourage our clients to reserve rentals a year in advance whenever possible.
  3. What activities will take place at your event? If the party has a theme, use the colors to choose your settings. If your event is at night, will you need dinner place settings? Is your even more casual without a sit-down meal? Would lounge seating work better for you?
  4. What do you (or your venue) have on hand? Before requesting rental information determine if you have certain items on hand. Some venues provide all of the “necessities” so that you’ll only need the extras.
  5. Think about your photo opps. While so many rentals are selected for function, others are simply for fun, for the photo, or for comfort.

Let’s start with answering a basic question: What is Home Staging?

Chicago home staging is where you hire someone to furnish and decorate your house in an effort to entice potential home buyers to buy it. When realtors discuss home staging with clients, they are referring to a method of preparing a property for sale on the marketplace. Staging is designed to showcase a home’s best assets, impress buyers, and sell it quickly for the highest possible price.

Because not all sellers stage their homes – you’ll be at an advantage if you elect to take the extra step of staging your property.

Why home staging is important?

According to our real-life studies, turns out most people can expect to own three homes during their lifetimes. So when buying or selling a home, many factors should be considered. First and foremost the financial consequences of preparing vs. not preparing your home to look its best.  You don’t want to settle for a lower selling price or a longer on-the-market period than you have to.

Relative to the amount of time and money involved, staging may be one of the most beneficial projects you take on. Potential buyers aren’t just looking for a structure to buy—they’re looking for somewhere they can visualize living the life of their dreams. Staging can create a more emotional purchase for the buyer, which ultimately can generate more money for the seller.

Home staging is also beneficial because potential buyers don’t want to see work that needs to be done upon moving into the home. For every problem they see, they’ll deduct its cost from their offer price.

Many people wonder why someone would spend money to stage their home when they know they will be moving out, but the answer is simple, evidence shows staging real estate is usually well worth the effort. On average, staged homes sell 88% faster and for 20% more than nonstaged homes.

Chances are if you are a homeowner and your real estate agent has advised you to stage your home, it’s likely due to your lack of furniture or your furniture and decor being out of date. Whether it’s a select couple of pieces you’re looking for or whole-home furnishings, Bowery and Bash can help.

“We are designers and storytellers obsessed with creating spaces with soul. We take a different approach to home staging, creating a one-of-a-kind look for each client that is anything but generic. The result: dream environments that bring the offer quickly,” says Bowery and Bash founder, Katie.

How much does it cost to stage a house?

As a general rule of thumb, the price of staging a home goes up as the size and price of the home goes up. The average cost for home staging rentals with Bowery and Bash starts at $1500/month with a 3-month minimum. In addition to our full staging services, we also offer a la carte furniture rentals (starting at $1000/month) and interior design consulting (starting at $400/2 hours).

While home staging can seem pricey – keeping a vacant home is also. From the ongoing mortgage to the bills every month that your unstaged house sits empty, home staging can expedite the process and save you money in the long run.  Home staging can help buyers envision the potential of their lives in your home.

“I used Katie and her team to stage a home getting ready to hit the market. Her advice on choosing the right furniture for the house was invaluable. Thanks for all of your help!” – Stephanie, Century 21

What to consider when it comes to staging:

The layout

The layout of your home can impact your staging budget. For example, the design and setup can be much more challenging within a high-rise condo or multi-story home, which requires additional heavy lifting and hiring additional help to move furniture in.

Which rooms need to be done

Focus on the rooms that potential buyers will spend the most time in—the living room, kitchen, dining room, and master bedroom are generally the most important. You’ll also want to pay attention to what the buyers see when they enter the home – the entryway or important rooms directly within view from the entry. That first impression, whether it is an unstaged empty home or a welcoming beautifully staged home, can make a world of difference in whether they decide to buy and how much they are willing to pay for your house.

What you need in each room

The number of items in each room will impact your total budget. Whether you are simply looking for furniture or a fully-staged room (design, decor, artwork, furniture, plants, accessories, etc), will contribute to your total monthly staging costs.

Professional home staging statistics

Every year, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) publishes reports on housing statistics, commercial research, and state area data in regards to housing and commercial real estate. The following is taken from a 2021 profile on home staging. Other data sources include Spotless Agency, Bankrate, and Investopedia.

  • Staging the living room was found to be very important for buyers (46%), followed by staging the master bedroom (43%), and staging the kitchen (35%).
  • About 28% of listing agents stage a seller’s home before putting it up in the market.
  • 40% of buyers arrange to look at the home they have seen staged online.
  • 28% of seller’s agents said they staged their homes before listing.
  • Homeowners see a 5-15% return on investment when they choose to professionally stage their homes before they sell them on the market.
  • Home buyers are 40% more likely to “walk through the home they saw online”.
  • 46% of 3,500 staged homes sold for 10% more than they would have as non-staged homes.
  • 95% of buyers search online for homes.

Property staging statistics

According to reports by Professional Staging, NAR, Investopedia, and Bankrate:

  • 86% of potential buyers find it easier for themselves to visualize a property when it is staged.
  • 77% of buyer’s agents said a properly-staged home makes it easier for prospective buyers to imagine themselves in the home.
  • Over 41% of top real estate agents believe that vacant homes benefit the most from home staging.
  • In 2017, only 35% of home buyers bid on homes without ever physically touring the location.

What if staging isn’t in the budget?

While staging is likely the best option to fill a vacant or unappealing home interior, if it’s out of the budget, you may consider a few alternative do it yourself options:

  1. Clean and Declutter – What may feel homey to you will feel overwhelming to others. Remove some of your items to allow potential buyers to see themselves in your space.
  2. Depersonalize – Buyers need to be able to envision themselves in your home – remove personal family photos, kid’s artwork, toys, and items on your countertop.
  3. Fresh Living Items – Adding potted plants or fresh-cut flowers helps your space feel clean, fresh, and full of life.
  4. Think Neutral – It’s unlikely that every potential buyer will like your paint or wallpaper choice if it’s bold. Instead, select neutral colors throughout your home.
  5. Curb Appeal – The exterior and entryway will factor into the home’s curb appeal and become an important element of the buyer’s first impression. Focus on adding new mulch, trimming your lawn and trees, washing your windows, and brightening up the exterior with flowers.
